Mathematics is more than simply knowing how to add and subtract numbers. Learning with understanding is essential to mathematics literacy. When the word "literacy" is heard, reading is probably thought about first. Not only does reading literacy mean being able to pronounce and decode words, it also means being able to comprehend and understand what one reads. Mathematical literacy is essentially the same thing - having procedural and computational fluency as well as conceptual understanding.
The various grade level instructional guideline documents outline what students must be able to do to learn mathematics with understanding, actively building new knowledge from experience and prior knowledge. Students, beginning with pre-kindergarten, build a successively deeper and more refined understanding of mathematics as they progress through the grades.
The Buffalo Public Schools mathematics curriculum and instructional guides were developed to support mathematics literacy for all students from grades pre-kindergarten through twelve.
