English Language Arts

English Language Arts Instruction is guided by curriculum aligned to New York State English Language Standards and is critical in supporting student academic success.

To graduate, students must earn four credits of ELA and one Regents exam credit in English at the commencement-level. The core content sequence is typically English I, English II, English III, and English IV. However, students may choose to take one or two Advanced Placement (AP) courses in English language arts to replace a core course; AP courses may also be taken in addition to the core sequence for elective credit. The International Baccalaureate Language A Literature course (2 credits) may also replace two courses within the core sequence. Elective offerings may vary by school.

Please note:

  • Some classes are unique to a particular program or school.

  • Not every class is offered at every school.

  • Course offerings may change yearly based on student course requests and other factors.
