On December 6, 2023, the Office of CLRI will launch the BPS Cares: Service Learning Day in collaboration with the University at Buffalo, during the December Disproportionality Training Session. On this momentous day, school disproportionality teams will participate in a service-learning experience at designated community sites, in which they will expand their outreach and connection to the community. In the essence of Dr. Gholdy Muhammad, who, in her book, Unearthing Joy, writes, "Defining the world as curriculum means we must move about and navigate the world, and see it as full of opportunities for teaching and learning," participants will reflect on the offerings of the community sites and explore how these sites center joy and uplift their students and families, as well as what socio-emotional wellness supports are offered and leveraged to address the needs of students and families. In the afternoon, school teams will reconvene at the University at Buffalo's North Campus for a collective debrief and reflection. The day will close with a keynote speech from, screenwriter, poet, lecturer, best-selling author, and children's rights advocate, Antwone Fisher.
