Dear Parents and Caregivers:
New York State Election Law (Section 5-507) has been updated, requiring school districts to promote and encourage voter registration and pre-registration. The Buffalo Board of Education has approved a policy in alignment with that State law (Policy #7440).
Students 16 & 17 years of age and who are otherwise qualified may pre-register to vote. To support the pre-registration process, the Buffalo City School District will provide 16- & 17-year-old students with this cover letter and an Erie County Voter Registration Application. These students will automatically be registered to vote by the Erie County Board of Elections upon reaching the age of 18. Please note, these students will not be able to vote prior to turning 18 years old.
Students who are already 18 years old will receive an application so they can fully register to vote. Parents, caregivers, and students are responsible for mailing the completed application to the Erie County Board of Elections.
