Dear Parent & Guardians,

There are many factors to consider when deciding to home school your child. The BPS Home School website contains important information regarding the home school enrollment process and other required procedures and parental obligations. Please read all the pages of the website carefully and be sure to complete all the required paperwork, as it is essential that both you and the district maintain and submit timely records.

Please note that home schooling is PARENT TAUGHT, not virtual through BPS or taught by a BPS teacher. Students enrolled in home school are no longer eligible for resources (i.e., computers, text books, etc.) through the district. In homeschool, the parent or guardian is responsible for the education of their child. In addition to providing instruction, the parent/guardian chooses the subjects to be taught (based on the child's age and ability), as well as the curriculum, method of teaching, and daily/weekly/yearly schedule. Homeschooling is independent, parent-directed, and parent-funded.

  • IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT ALL FORMS BE SUBMITTED VIA EMAIL TO BPSHomeSchooling. Electronic submission of forms will allow the Office of Home Schooling to better process paperwork and conform receipt in a timelier fashion.

IMPORTANT: Students who are homeschooled through high school cannot be awarded a local or Regents diploma from NYS. If a high school student returns to a Buffalo Public School after being home schooled for any of grades 9 - 12, the school principal determines which home school credits may or may not be awarded towards a diploma. Please refer to the NYSED home school website for additional information from the NYS Department of Education. 

 The procedures outlined on the website are utilized as the standard for reviewing Individualized Home Instruction Plans (IHIPs) and determining substantial equivalence of instruction as required by the NYSED Commissioner’s Regulation 100.10.
