Slips, trips, and falls are the most common causes of injuries in the workplace, causes of these dangers are:

  • slippery walkways, pavement and stairs due to ice

  • uneven stairs, parking lot and sidewalks

  • wet floors due to the rain and snow

  • unexpected ice

Things you can do to avoid these dangers:

  • Notify the building engineer of any hazards you see inside and outside the building immediately. If they are not around notify the office staff so the area can be marked.

  • Wear the proper footwear for the conditions

  • Use the railings when going both up and down the stairs

  • Be sure you walk slowly and carefully

  • Wipe your feet on any rug or carpet when entering a building to dry them off

  • Use 2 feet when stepping out of your car in the parking lot

  • Pay attention to where you are walking, put your cell phone away

Slips, Trips & Falls in the classroom

Slips/Falls Slips and falls often occur on same level, liquid or grease spills, on stairs, ice or snow, and from different levels.

To avoid slips and falls, consider the following prevention strategies:

  • Be aware of the classroom environment and remove any trip and fall hazards such as backpacks, coats, books, binders, supplies, tools, equipment, electrical cords, and other items left in walkways

  • Remove worn or frayed carpet or mats, replace cracked or damaged floor tiles, and assure a clear path is maintained around desks and tables Keep an eye out for boxes or debris during the first few days of school, especially during move-in periods.

  • Consider designated collection areas or zones for collection of the materials

  • Utilize stepladders when hanging items; avoid using chairs, stools, milk crates or trash cans to stand on

Enforce good housekeeping procedures:

  • Put away supplies/tools/equipment/papers when finished

  • Dispose of materials no longer being used
